New Accreditation: Frost Heave BS812-124:2009

Frost heave is the phenomenon where frozen soil or other road foundation materials swell upwards in very cold weather. As the surface layers freeze, free water migrates upwards from warmer layers beneath, and the volume of ice continues to increase, causing damage to road surfaces and other structures.

Not all materials are susceptible to this effect, and this test allows us to discern whether this is the case.

Carefully prepared specimens are arranged in a purpose-built refrigerated cabinet, with air at -17˚C above and water at 4˚C below. We then measure the increase in volume as ice forms inside the specimens.

We’re very pleased to announce that we have just been granted UKAS accreditation for this complex testing procedure.
